XFEL sources offer the possibility of imaging structures of biomolecules without crystals. The technology has already been developed to inject biomolecules, accompanied by a solvation layer and chaperone molecules, into the femtosecond XFEL probe with a continuous diffraction pattern recorded. Development of “diffract and destroy” imaging technology has motivated current international investment of XFEL facilities in the US, Japan and Europe.

The OzXFEL team forms a key part of the sample delivery program as part of the international single molecule imaging initiative. From more than 100 researchers worldwide we are the only representative from Australia contributing to this project.
